My '01 Impreza Wagon

Featured Replies

Hey Guys & Gals

i recently got a 2001 impreza L Wagon AWD.2.2L Automatic

316,065 miles when bought, she has an issue running, cylinder 1 doesnt fire, previous owner said he bought it that way and has driven it for a year.

i paid $250 for it and inspected till december, i would like to get her running properly

father thinks its a burnt or  bent valve.. because i get 30 psi 60 at best cylinder 3 gets 150psi runs on the same cam.. i was also told timing could do this as well, just a few teeth off can cause it..

what do you guys think ?

after testing and checking timing, i am convinced its the valve..

put air into cylinder 1 and the air came out the exhaust just as fast as it went in..

so i need valves, another question is the EJ222 a 16 valve ?

i need 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves ?

Yes it's a 16v. Either replace the valves and have the head machined to accept new valves, or just put a good phase 2 2.2 head on it.

well if i change the head i'd like to do both and make her a dual port, is their dual port heads i can install on my EJ222 ?

Yeah phase 2 2.5 heads will go right on and won't be much different at all. The phase 2 heads are almost identical.

what model and year has phase 2 ? the impreza rs 2.5L ?

Sohc 2.5

I know that 99-02 would fit for sure. Probably a few other years as well.

ok cool and i would still have the same power ? or more ?

ok cool and i would still have the same power ? or more ?

Probably be about the same.

ok, now i am confused, Justin from Facebook sais the heads are nowhere near identical and sais the heads will cause a powerloss..

and i'd have to use EJ22 gaskets (kinda obvious)

Quote:

I wouldnt.... the bore of the 22 will leave a sharp edge that will stick
out into the combustion chamber and collect carbon that will eventually
hotspot and cause detonation. You'll also lower the compression (not
something you want to do on an engine that's gutless down low to begin
with)

It's been done before. Many times. The phase 2 heads are almost the same. The phase 1 heads are very different. Sohc vs. DOHC, along with the use of a different intake manifold. There are many turbo builds built that way with no issues. So slapping phase 2 w.5 heads onto a 2.2 shouldn't cause much issue at, considering how similar they are.

ok, i might get a set for $100 from a friend..

intake is different ? i know header would be and i have a stainless in the garage...

Intake will bolt right on. There's a chance you'll have to swap over the cam gears and crank sprocket from the 2.2 heads. I can't remember for sure.

Did you swap your cam pulleys over from the 2.2? I think they're different between the 2.2 and 2.5
