Ball joint boot Balloon... POP

Featured Replies

I installed two new MOOG ball joints on my 96 legacy.  Got the car aligned and noticed the next day that driver's side BJ boot was torn with grease leaking out.  I replaced the ball joint thinking it was defective or the shop messed it up somehow, but now the second new ball joint looks like a balloon ready to pop, perhaps the same fate as the last ball joint.  Did i mess up the install or something?

Did you apply grease to the outside of the boot at the bottom? The boot has to slide around when you turn. If there is no grease on the bottom it sticks to the control arm and can rip.

Should be able to pull the boot up with a small screwdriver or pick and wipe some grease under it.

You could also try poking a small hole at the bottom so air can get out.
