  1. car: 1996 Legacy 130k Symptoms: CEL P1401 on and off and a bit of rev jumping when on a cold start. Other than that everything seems fine. No problems during fueling or any vapors escaping when i open the gas cap. I found this post copied below and used it to try to do some diagnosis. With the ECU in test mode the fuel tank pressure solenoid clicks and with a hose disconnected air blown in by mouth starts and stops with the clicks. What should my next move be?
  2. I installed two new MOOG ball joints on my 96 legacy. Got the car aligned and noticed the next day that driver's side BJ boot was torn with grease leaking out. I replaced the ball joint thinking it was defective or the shop messed it up somehow, but now the second new ball joint looks like a balloon ready to pop, perhaps the same fate as the last ball joint. Did i mess up the install or something? first picture shows bulging ball joint boot 2nd shoes normal ball joint on passenger side
  3. problem solved. While checking the transmission mount, i found that the exhaust hanger that connects to the tranny had snapped.
  4. The car is a 96 Legacy 2.2 auto 100k. I recently replaced the steering rack, ball joints and control arms and the sound started happening about 500 miles after. I'm hearing a brief squeak or squeal coming from the front of the car when blipping the accelerator when driving, its also present when hitting a bump. Its also easily produced when turning and accelerating at the same time. It won't make the sound in park, but not moving the shifter from park to reverse will usually produced the sound. Braking doesn't effect the sound and since the car makes the sound when parked as well I'm ruling out brakes. While the car is parked i've tried to reproduce the sound by rocking the car back and forth, nada. Also tried shaking the engine by hand to check the motor mounts. I tightened the AC and accessory belts, didn't change anything. Any help is appreciated cracking the mystery of 1000 squeaks.
  5. Circling to the left doesn't make the sound. Definitely the rear. bouncing the car doesn't create a sound. Touching the brakes doesn't change the sound. I'm going to inspect the rear driver wheel/well. I'm thinking turning right puts more stress on that wheel so maybe the sound is coming from that side.
  6. The noise doesn't track with tire rotations, but it does creak repeatedly if i drive in circles. It only happens when moving, it doesn't happen when just turning the wheel at a standstill. It's not anything torque bind related which was something I was nervous about since i just replaced the Duty c solenoid, but the sound appears in 2wd mode too.
  7. I'm hearing a rubber creaking sound when taking sharp right turns usually from a standstill. It's only happening on right turns never left. The sound seems to be coming from the rear passenger side. I removed the wheel and looked for obvious signs like a leaking strut, or and busted rubber pieces, but I can't quite narrow it down. The car is a 95 legacy with 95k. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?
  8. Car is a 96 Legacy 2.2 with 90k miles. My resevoir has been slowly leaking, from full to below the low mark in about 2 months. I can't find any external leaks, but the bottom of my engine is an oil field due to a leaking oil separator plate, so it's hard to diagnose a slow leak. I took the resevoir off and pour out this lovely sludge which was sitting at the bottom of the bottle. (pic 1) I also noticed this soft grey buildup under the radiator cap (pic 2). I plan on flushing the radiator, but should I be worried about headgaskets or some other costly repair? Thanks for the help guys! All i know about cars I've learned here.
  9. Seems to be rattling consistently at the same RPMs, I'm going to give those heat shields another looking over.
  10. the people at the dealership can't figure out what part number it is either! I guess some parts are never numbered... sad little part.
  11. These are the little stoppers found in the door, which stop the upper limit of window travel. I need a new one since mine is stripped and i can't find the part number, please help!
  12. tried accelerating in D with the brakes on but couldn't reproduce the sound. Another thing, there's no sort of engine performance loss when the sound occurs.
  13. I read this somewhere on the internet: "there is a bushing in the end of the torque converter that holds it centered on the input shaft of the trans. If this bushing was worn out, there would be trans fluid pouring out of the front seal of the trans" I am losing AT Fluid and its not coming from the power-steering. It's also not pouring out, but I believe it's coming from the area where the transmission meets the engine. This leads me to believe I have a worn bushing which is leading to the possible flexplate noises. Could the bushing at the end of the torque converter leak just a little?
  14. Is there anyway to check the flexplate without taking out the engine or transmission?
  15. fuel filter is 20k / 7years old, spark plugs are 30k/11years old, and I have no records of the pcv valve being changed ever.
