I was getting ready for a road trip last month and about 45 minutes after I left our caravan stopped for a photo opp. When we got back on the road I noticed what I thought might be rod knock, but it would only make noise under load, and was related to wheel speed. I did some research, checked my wheel bearings and axles, and they checked out fine (although the DOJs for the front diff were loose, I could wiggle them by hand). So I jacked up the front of the car, put the fuse in the FWD slot and put the transmission in gear. The ratcheting sound doesn't seem to be coming from the bellhousing or front diff, but sounds like it's coming from the bowels of the transmission, above the oil pan. Is my transmission trash? Is this a common failure? The Forester has almost 250k miles on it. If the trans *IS* toast, what's the preferred method of finding a healthy replacement? @GeneralDisorder @idosubaru
  2. Hi all, I'm excited to be a new member of this community! Looks like a lot of good info and fun stuff gets shared here. I'm going to document my ride in this thread. My beloved "Beast" - '92 Geo Metro - died a couple weeks ago (transmission) after getting me through two years of high school and three years of college. I thought it would be hard to find anything as practical or as endearing as it was for me - boy was I wrong! Enter Subaru! I am the proud new owner of this 1993 Loyale wagon with 4WD and the 5spd. Only 116,000 miles and in beautiful condition for only $1,500. It's mechanically sound - except for a hole in the muffler and a potentially busted catalytic converter (slight burning smell) - and starts, runs, and shifts like a dream. Old owner changed ball joints, struts, timing belts, battery, engine seals, water pump, fuel pump, and some other little stuff (with documentation ). So the first thing I did was drive it up a mountain on rough, muddy old logging roads, and the 4WD works like a dream even with stock 13 inch all-seasons. I have big plans to turn this into my next Adventuremobile and hope to get to at least 250,000 miles with regular TLC, or at least until autonomous electric vehicles render these fabulous cars functionally obsolete. First things first: I proceeded to take it home and rip out the ancient rotting speakers and the terrible cassette/radio head unit. Here's the plans: Now: I'm going to get new hatch struts - the old ones are pretty weak and future plans necessitate this. Next I'm going to put in a solid sound system. I don't need to wake the neighbors, but I want to be able to hear my low- and mid-range bass and drum tones doing 65 mph with the windows down. Plus, I want all my sound components hidden, out of the way of the Soob's extreme practicality. I'm going to put four of these thin-profile Kicker speakers in the doors, this shallow-mount 8" subwoofer in the liftgate with a custom enclosure - hopefully this isn't too hard/is possible - and hook it all together with this 4-channel Planet Audio 800W amp and this Bluetooth-ready head unit. Should be a massive sound upgrade without too much cost. I'm also going to do the classic new-used car routine: new spark plugs & wires, change oil/filter, air filter, tranny fluid, steering fluid, flush coolant. I'm also probably going to play it safe and replace the vacuum lines and radiator hoses, get new brakes, clean out the EGR (replace if necessary for $70 or just plug the vacuum line), and probably the entire exhaust system (might use a cat, might not - no emissions checks here in Idaho and I don't want to deal with the hassle). Later: One thing I love is tailgate camping, with music/light coming from the car so you don't have to get out a bunch of complicated equipment. So with that in mind, I also want to put two or four speakers into the liftgate/trunk area to play some tunes out the back when the hatch is up. Also in the trunk I want to inset some LED light bars so I can light up a campsite or whatever else without taxing the battery too much. I kind of want to add a 120V plugin or two in the back as well. This all should complete a pretty dope hatch setup for camping, etc while complementing the sound system (but not breaking the bank). Next is a roof rack - probably some simple, cheap gutter-clamp rack with crossbars which I can use for mountain bikes, kayaks, and mattresses. If I get real adventurous I might add fog lights or a towing hitch. I'm aiming to keep the whole project under $3,000 total - so my modifications budget is $1,500. What do you guys think? What suggestions do you have? Which should I watch out for, replace, or modify on a '93 Loyale? Do you think this is doable within my budget? How do you think this Loyale would do on a 4,000-mile road trip to Juneau, Alaska and back? Any other PNW folks around?   4. For at least a few months I have had this popping sound coming from what sounds like is inside the dash after decelerating from highway speeds. I am hoping that someone has heard this before or can help me pinpoint cause. I'd like to fix it if possible or at least know that something critical is failing or going to leave me stranded. This is a 1993 Subaru Impreza Wagon/Hatchback and has an EJ18 1.8L SOHC engine with manual transmission, AWD, and no ABS. This sound only occurs after the car as warmed up (it is silent when cold), after driving at 50+ mph for at least a few minutes, and then decelerating and driving around slower. Here is a video where you can hear the noise I am talking about: This video has the driving around cut out. This is after I have driven probably 5 miles at 55 mph and then slowed down into a subdivision. You will notice that it starts making a popping noise which sounds like it is somewhere in the middle of the dash. This is noticeable after getting off the highway but becomes even more noticeable once I slow down further from 35 mph to 20 mph. During the course of this video, I move the camera around between the drivers side and passenger side under the dash, and the on top of the dash. This noise is noticeably louder if there is a bigger difference in speed. Example: 70 mph freeway to an almost stop off an exit. This sound does not exist when the car is completely still. Or if it does, there are only one or two pops and then it stops. You will notice that the noise is not rhythmic and fairly random. I do not believe this is a problem with a engine rotating part, otherwise the sound would exist when revving the car in neutral; which it does not. This video was taken over a month ago and the noise has become louder/more severe when it occurs. This sound started somewhere around the time after I replaced timing belt (and other regular replacement parts normally done at this time), water pump, thermostat, flushed the cooling system and added brand new coolant. This may or may not be related. Has anyone heard anything like this before? Any hypothesis? Is my car dying a slow painful death? Thanks in advance!
  5. The car: 1996 Legacy, 90,000 miles, 4EAT transmission, new plugs at 60k, new fuel filter at 70k. Symptoms: Loud metal on metal clanking sound when driving up steep hills. The sound is like the sound of a crinkling can but repetitive. Only happens up hills when RPMs are slowing because of increased load from road grade steepening. If I let up on the gas the sound stops and if I floor it and the transmission shifts down the sound stops. The sound is audible with the windows up and is very loud. It sounds like the engine is going to fall apart! I just bought the car and used 87 octane on the first fill. The second tank i used 93 octane and am still getting the sound when pushing a bit uphill. Anyone have any idea?
  6. Hi Guys I am pleased to inform you that i finally bought my first very own 1998 2.0 GL non turbo Subaru Impreza 5 Door station wagon. It might not mean much to many of you, but for me it is, especially when you are limited with cash and you manage to buy your first Subaru cash. so here is the thing, and i need some advise from the Subby experts. I pick up a bearing sound like noise coming from the tranny, as soon as my clutch is engaged its gone. when i drive in 1st, 2nd 3rd its loud and gets softer in 4th and 5th gear. as soon as i de-accelarate the noise is gone, when i accelarate the noise is back. my concern................its gradually getting louder. Today......... i discovered that the noise is substantially softer when i engage the car in 4WD LO and when the 4WD lever is between HI and LO (neutral) the noise is gone. a Mech told me {Bro you gorra replace you Tranny, she is busted} im hoping he is wrong,,,,,,any beneficial advise you can enrich me with. by the way....i still love this car,,,im amazed with the way this car corners although i dont have the best of tyres. cioa.

You could say I lucked out on this local craigslist find. 71k miles, rust, scratchless, spotless interior, all original and all electronics working flawlessly, 1986 front-wheel drive automatic XT Turbo. I'm a complete novice when it comes to modifications, but I want to upgrade the audio.....Replace the tape deck/am/fm unit with a modern deck, replace speakers, install small sub and amp. The sound system is complete crap. Anybody have experience upgrading these components in an XT? Any advice would be extremely helpful. Love my first subaru!
