  1. Hey y'all. So I own an 06' Impreza Outback Sport, and for like the past year or 2 there has been a constant rattling coming from what seems like the driver's side of the car. It happens when I hit any sort of bump, especially small ones. If I'm on a rough road it sounds like my car is literally falling apart. It sounds like metal on metal CLANKING, that's the only way to describe it. It's not dull, it's loud and metalic. It drives me absolutely insane, and I'm not super good with cars so I don't know what's causing it. A few winters back, a snow drift at the bottom of my street had a channel cut through it by running water. My car, being low, slammed the front end and cracked my front moulding to the point where it was falling off the car. My dav thought of a good fix using sheet metal strap to resecure it which worked well and doesn't really stand out either. but after months of this constant rattle I thought it might be metal on metal contact with the straps and so we redid it. This didn't work. The rattle continued. I recently took my car in to replace all my tires because the last alignment I got was apparently crap and made the insides of my back tires completely bald. They aligned it, and I asked them to try to find the source of this rattle, which they couldn't find. Though I don't think they even really tried. He said something vague about it probably being my front molding because i told him what happened. I highly doubt this is the cause, the sound is a semi-metallic clanking while the moulding is plastic. When I redid the strap with my dad, we noticed the engine cover/splash guard had a tiny bit of play when we pushed it. And conceivably if not secure could rattle. I think a few of the clips are missing and I plan on replacing them, however, I don't know the correct ones to get. This would make sense because I think it started around the time my front end fell apart, and a scrape like that could strip a clip from the undercarriage. But everywhere I look online, it always ends up being something else like a sway bar causing front side clunking, though I don't think any of them have the sound I have. It is not a clunk, it is a CLACK. Either metal on metal or hard plastic on metal. It is going to drive me insane. It's to the point where I don't even wanna roll my windows down because I'll hear it. Even with them up I can sometimes hear it in the cabin. Any thoughts on what it is? Also, I don't know when this started, but when I cut my wheel hard to the right (to pull into a parking spot or something), there is an obvious grinding noise that is most definitely the tire. I checked my wheel well and I don't see anything out of sorts. This doesn't happen when I pull in to the left. It seems to abate when I slow down, so if I'm going like 2-3 MPH I usually don't hear it. But I absolutely hate it, I should be able to cut the wheel with no grinding. It sounds like if you've ever stopped a bike wheel with your shoe as a kid If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I have a nice car, I hate it sounding like it's falling apart going over bumpy roads or pulling into a parking spot. Otherwise, I'm to the point where im going to take it to the only Subaru service in the city and pay OUT THE NOSE it get it fixed because i am not leaving until it is. Thank you very much
  2. when I am on my cell phone in my 2013 Legacy and I turn on the head lights the person on the other end hears a loud buzzing noise like a horn blaring or something. If I turn off the Head lights the noise stops. I want to install a ferrite noise suppressor on the headlight ballast but I don't know where to find the headlight ballast. Please help.

    '91 Loyale Engine Noise

    Good Morning Everyone. My question is about a noise that I believe is coming from my engine... or at least some rotating component attached to the engine. The sound is a sort of clank, not a tick like lifters make, and it doesn't seem to be rapid enough to actually match the engine rpm..... This being said it DOES change with an increase in rpm. It reminds me of the sound older diesel truck engines make at low rpm or when they are cold. The clanking...... The biggest problem I have in diagnosing the sound is that it only happens under load, and is the worst at low rpm. For example, when I drive home there is a water/runoff dip in the road right before a hill. So I slow down, go over the dip and accelerate up the hill; at this point in 2nd gear I'm around 1500-2000 rpm.This is when the noise is the most prominent, possibly because there is little wind noise at that slow a speed and the engine noise in limited at that low a rpm. The engine ALSO has a ticking noise that either fades or stops suddenly when the engine is warmed usually. I have (according to the oil pressure gauge) upwards of 65-psi at 3000+ rpm and 15-psi at idle which I believe is appropriate for this vehicle. This I'm figuring IS a stuck lifter that frees up when the engine warms but I thought it was worth mentioning. Any ideas? Thanks.
  4. For at least a few months I have had this popping sound coming from what sounds like is inside the dash after decelerating from highway speeds. I am hoping that someone has heard this before or can help me pinpoint cause. I'd like to fix it if possible or at least know that something critical is failing or going to leave me stranded. This is a 1993 Subaru Impreza Wagon/Hatchback and has an EJ18 1.8L SOHC engine with manual transmission, AWD, and no ABS. This sound only occurs after the car as warmed up (it is silent when cold), after driving at 50+ mph for at least a few minutes, and then decelerating and driving around slower. Here is a video where you can hear the noise I am talking about: This video has the driving around cut out. This is after I have driven probably 5 miles at 55 mph and then slowed down into a subdivision. You will notice that it starts making a popping noise which sounds like it is somewhere in the middle of the dash. This is noticeable after getting off the highway but becomes even more noticeable once I slow down further from 35 mph to 20 mph. During the course of this video, I move the camera around between the drivers side and passenger side under the dash, and the on top of the dash. This noise is noticeably louder if there is a bigger difference in speed. Example: 70 mph freeway to an almost stop off an exit. This sound does not exist when the car is completely still. Or if it does, there are only one or two pops and then it stops. You will notice that the noise is not rhythmic and fairly random. I do not believe this is a problem with a engine rotating part, otherwise the sound would exist when revving the car in neutral; which it does not. This video was taken over a month ago and the noise has become louder/more severe when it occurs. This sound started somewhere around the time after I replaced timing belt (and other regular replacement parts normally done at this time), water pump, thermostat, flushed the cooling system and added brand new coolant. This may or may not be related. Has anyone heard anything like this before? Any hypothesis? Is my car dying a slow painful death? Thanks in advance!
  5. My 2004 Subaru Outback wagon suddenly got super loud on acceleration, and I'm guessing this broken pipe is the culprit? (Pic attached.) Can anyone tell me exactly which part this is, and a general idea of how expensive it might be to repair? Is it just a welding issue, or will the part need to be replaced? Any DIY exhaust repair options I could try? I do most minor repairs myself, but I have no welding tools. I can't afford much, so I'm trying to educate myself to ensure I don't get ripped off. I'm new in town, my trusty Subaru guru is 500 miles away. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  6. So there is a recent ticking noise coming from under car whenever i let off of the gas. As soon as i give it the slightest amount of throttle, the noise stops, but right when i let off the gas the ticking noise returns. Especially when in lower gears. It may have something to do with going over small rocks and hitting under neath while driving in the hills, but i have no clue what the noise could be. I heard that it could be the heat shield, but i removed most of it earlier due to annoying rattle noise. Noise does not occur when just parked in neutral. Please help! Thanks, Austin
  7. 85 BRAT. Starting out by backing up there is a grinding noise that sounds like worn brake shoes against the drum, checking those they are good. the cv joints are original (103K miles) and no visable sign of grease leakage. No driving problems not in 4WD although there is constant noise from the rear. Also any way to reduce the sound coming from the fuel pump mounted to the frame?
  8. I am getting vibration while driving. My Haynes guide states that having vibration and noise that changes pitch consistent with speed is indicative of a bad rear drive-shaft. The Haynes guide seems to indicate that the center bearing on the drive-shaft can be replaced, but other sources dispute that.The car has only about 95k on it. Another Subaru Outback forum says to get a used drive-shaft rather than buying a new one (minimum I've seen for new is about $338). So looking for some advice if I can replace the center bearing or not, or if a used drive-shaft assembly would be OK. My understanding is this issue is rare. What range of Outback years does a 2008 drive shaft fit? Any other advice on this issue would be welcome. Thanks
  9. Hello all, This is my first Subaru so I'm sure there is a lot I don't know. I search for the answer before posting so please forgive me if I missed it. When Car reaches 45 it makes a chirp or squeal sound just once. I purchesed this 2 m ago from a local used car dealer. I took it back to them and they diagnosed the serpentine belt as the problem. Problem has not changed. Any ideas? 2011 outback 4 cyl
  10. Howdy, My Subaru won't start all of a sudden. I am new to this car, so bear with me. I will explain what I have observed. Upon turning the key to a point the lights turn on the fuel pump in the rear makes a "Rrrrrrr... Rrrrrrr" Sound with about a one-and-a-half second pause between sounds. This happened before but the car would start and then there would be a constant "rrrrr" sound. There was a situation not so long ago where I cranked for a while longer than I'd like to, and it did start. The fuel pump and fuel filter look brand new. But my first assumption to this point is that I must have been too low on gas and they got gummed up. However, I must consider than the sound is normal. Again, I'm a newb. Did a firing test. Definitely firing. Suggestions, ideas, knowledge? Update 1: After letting the starter attempt to do it's job for about five or six seconds the car did start and does start every time after. However, I do not know if that means the problem is somehow solved. The idle itself on the first rough-start was fine, but became more adequate all of a sudden with a higher RPM. I will be doing a cold start soon to see if I experience the same difficulty. Update 2: I let the fuel pump oscillate two to three times before attempting a start. After actually running or being on a trip it starts right away. The short (if there truly was one) is also gone. I have not experienced difficulty to start anymore. I assume it was dirty fuel causing inadequate pressure. But really, I don't know.
  11. So today I replaced balljoints in my 2000 forester. The old ones were a pita to get out but with a little heat and some motivation from a 3# sledge they gave in and came out. I was thinking everything was good...cleaned up my mess and started the car to test it out. As soon as i shifted from park to reverse there is a loud humming/grinding noise sounds like its coming from where the axles meet the differential. I did have to do some beating, pushing, pulling and a lot of cussing to not only get the old joints off but I also had a hard time getting the stud part of the bj back into the hole on the a arm. It makes the noise going into any gear and I also noticed the "AT oil temp" is lit up on the dash. Before I saw the light my first thought was while I was in there messing with it maybe i pulled the axle out a little ways and now the splines arent matching up? I didnt think I was putting that much pressure on it plus i never even messed with the pin holding the axle on but Idk. After seeing the at temp light now Im lost because prior to this Ive never seen that light or had and kind of sound or issue. The light came on within 30 sec of the car being started so idk hot it would get hot that quick but idk. Its dark here now so tomorrow my day is going to consist of taking it back apart and trying to diagnose the problem. I did some searching and didnt really come up with anything so I figured Id ask around here and hopefully get a few opinions and possibly a starting point. It just seemed strange to me that I didnt have any problem until I did the ball joints. which shouldnt have affected anything but the...ball joints?? I also forgot to mention that when I try to shift back into park theres a grinding noise like trying to shift a manual without the clutch and it only stops when i turn the key off but when you start the car the noise isnt there until you try to shift out of park. This ******* thing has me baffled! Anyways like always any info or help is greatly appreciated!!
  12. Hello. So my friend did an engine swap on his 1990 Subaru Legacy. During the change the shaft came out of the torque converter. Now, when we start the car there is a clunking kind of noise. Any suggestions on what can be causing that noise or how to fix it would be so helpful. Are there any spline alignments in the engine?
  13. Hello All, I'm experiencing some noise from my manual transmission (i think) during the recent cold snap in northern Vermont. The car is a 09' with 100,000 miles on it.The noise only happens when I'm on the throttle and loading the engine, stops completely as soon as I lift off the gas. This only happens when it is <5°F, this morning it was -12°F and it was very loud. I would describe the noise as a knocking or clacking. There are also two levels to the sound. Under light throttle I have one noise, and under hard throttle I have a different, louder, worse sounding noise. I get the noise even after letting the engine warm up completely, which leads me to believe the noise is in the gear box, as this does not warm up while idling. Also, the noise does go away after 10-15 minutes of driving. It seems to happen in all gears and does not happen when I rev the engine in neutral. From the driver seat, the noise seems to come from directly below the center console, maybe a bit in front of the shifter. I have replaced the transmission fluid, maybe 15,000 miles ago with Subaru extra-s fluid. Has any one else experienced these symptoms?
  14. Hi Guys I am pleased to inform you that i finally bought my first very own 1998 2.0 GL non turbo Subaru Impreza 5 Door station wagon. It might not mean much to many of you, but for me it is, especially when you are limited with cash and you manage to buy your first Subaru cash. so here is the thing, and i need some advise from the Subby experts. I pick up a bearing sound like noise coming from the tranny, as soon as my clutch is engaged its gone. when i drive in 1st, 2nd 3rd its loud and gets softer in 4th and 5th gear. as soon as i de-accelarate the noise is gone, when i accelarate the noise is back. my concern................its gradually getting louder. Today......... i discovered that the noise is substantially softer when i engage the car in 4WD LO and when the 4WD lever is between HI and LO (neutral) the noise is gone. a Mech told me {Bro you gorra replace you Tranny, she is busted} im hoping he is wrong,,,,,,any beneficial advise you can enrich me with. by the way....i still love this car,,,im amazed with the way this car corners although i dont have the best of tyres. cioa.
