Front Differential possibly? Thoughts? Thanks.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I purchased a 2000 Legacy L Sedan 2.5l and 4 days later it started a loud clicking in forward and reverse going about 1500 to 2000 rpms and louder when the engine is coasting/quiet. I think we ruled out the cv joints/axles because the sound goes away in hard left/right reverse but is the same forward, reverse, and hard left/right forward. Thats what I've read. Though, I hear something very quiet in hard reverse; Not clicking. My step dad got on the car with hood open and we tested in just forward/reverse and he heard the hard clicking sound from the center. Got underneath with exhaust system removed, fuse in fwd fusebox, jackstands, ran the wheels. Sound from the center. Rear wheels spin in unison. Front separate. Assume that's due to nature of AWD cause front wheels separately managed. Any way, any ideas for my Dad and I to further troubleshoot?

From what I've read I think it's the front differential ergo replacing the tranny is the cheapest repair. I looked up matching trannys but found a local low mileage exact match tranny. 99 through 04 legacy l or legacy brighton only should work. Thanks for reading and any help.
