Please help swapped engine and wouldn't go in gear removed engine now torque converter is stuck on transmission shaft nothing will release how do I remove it's an automatic

There's a C clip on the back of the TC shaft that needs to be squeezed.

 

Was the TC fully seated before the engine was installed? When the bolts from the flex plate are tightened into the Torque converter it should pull it forward by about 1/4 inch. If not fully seated it crushes the trans pump.

 

Is it not going into gear at the shifter? (Wont shift out of park?) In which case there's a release with a screwdriver inside the car. Owners manual gives instructions.

 

Or shifts into drive but wont move?

Shifts but won't go into gear ,engine went together fine no grunting, I'm thinking the torque converter on new engine could be bad, also how do u get to clip , and thank u

The TC should just pull right out of the trans. If not, something bad happened, keep pullin'.

Any way to release the shaft from transmission, been pulling yanking swearing have replacement parts , everything went together good but I had tc on engine , I think that's were I went wrong

Trans pump is shot. New converter won't do you a bit of good at this point. You need a transmission.

 

Converter always stays in the trans whenever you separate engine/trans on an automatic car.

Have a parts car with tranny but had some front wheel slam and hop was told transaxle so I'd assume that's in front of transmission and tranny would be fine I'd hope , also did I f#@# up the trans pump bye not leaving tc on trans and or not attaching it to tranny first on install

Yeah. if it's not on the trans and seated 100% (3 separate little clunks to get it in) it crushes the trans pump and the trans is shot. You killed your trans. But you're not the first to do it. Do a search on here and there's a good write up for seating a torque converter. On cars with the 2.5 motor, it should only have 1/8 of an inch between the trans bellhousing and the back of the torque converter at the starter.

 

Hunt for a good used trans via car-part.com and row52.com - craigslist is a good source too. Make sure the final drive ratio is the same. Look up the trans code on yours and compare to other potential transmissions. Generally they follow the motor with a few exceptions. Usually if it came with a 2.5 it needs a trans from another car with a 2.5 and same for 2.2. You can cross any of these if you swap the read differential from the donor car into your car. They have to match.

 

With some good hunting, I've gotten good transmissions in the $100-$300 with good research a bit of negotiation.

No. Transaxle is a front wheel drive transmission. Possibly you're thinking front or center differential? Possibly rear differential? Depending what's bad, the donor trans could be salvageable. Do you know what specifically is wrong with it?

Parts car right front wheel was banging and hopping,bad front diff,I hope. am I assuming the trans is behind front diff is that correct,so pull trans and leave diff.

The front diff is attached to the transmission.

You could swap the good diff onto the good trans, but it is a lot of work, the front diff would need to be set up in it's new home (pinion setup and maybe other stuff too)

Good diff is in car that I squished the trans pump in just have to swap trans to that one, can I leave diff in place while I remove tranny

The diff comes out with the trans, no way to separate before removing from the car.

Yeah. The differential is internal on these, not separate like trucks. There are some folks who have swapped them, but your best bet is a good used transmission to swap in there.
