June 19, 20169 yr 1998 legacy outback, cooked the seal retainer cap/welded it to exhaust cam. Took head out, burned #1 cylinder exhaust valve replaced&milled head. New head gasket and belt and tensioner +new cam seals and crank seal. Couldn't get the motor mounts in, (rocky ground and long day), so tried shortcut. Started engine, thought rocking a bit would bring the engine forward a quarter inch. Engine dies. Repeat. Maybe it won't run w/out exhaust manifold bolted up?
June 19, 20169 yr It will run w/our exhaust bolted up but its not a good idea for more than a second. Check the large hose that goes from IAC to intake tubing that is the most common thing to forget to put back on and will cause this exact issue.
June 19, 20169 yr Won't run without all of the intake tubing connected properly in place. Needs input from the MAF to maintain A/F ratio after starting. Haven't ever had much issue getting the mount bolts to drop in the holes. Usually they fall right in. If it seems like it's too far back the trans mount may be worn out. Try setting the engine down on the crossmember and use a prybar to rock it side to side while you pull forward. Should drop into place then.
June 20, 20169 yr X2 on the IACV hose. Done this twice and it will fire for a second and either die right away or run like a slug, just barely running.
