How can I tell when I should change my transmission fluid? I have a fwd manual 87 3door.

<p>Is it not quite full or is it discolored/dirty? Has it never changed? If the answer to any of those questions is yes... its time for a change.</p>

The service manual says to inspect every 30k but gives a footnote that under heavy service to replace every 30k. I tend to err on the side of caution and change at 30k and my #AT's seem to last longer than most peoples.

 

You don't need to replace the filter unless you suspect contamination as it is only a screen anyway, just drain and replace the fluid.
