October 3, 20169 yr I just R and R my motor and tranny on a project Subie Outback I purchased. After I got it running, the transmission is leaking out the front of the bell housing. I suspect front seal that I replaced. Any ideas before I pull this tranny out again to put a new seal in. Possible other leak points to check in this area?
October 4, 20169 yr Cooler lines or the spin on filter if it has it. Seals are kinda of picky on these. What brand of seal did you buy?
October 4, 20169 yr Author Ultimately, I purchased an OEM seal from the dealer. It was the only one that fit in the housing "properly". Apparently it was still a bit tight as I did not get it seated in the space well. I just don't know if I should remove the engine or the transmission to get this work done. It is almost a toss on work load. I looked at the bell housing just behind the Flywheel and saw the fluid coming out over the edge of the bell housing. I have to assume it is the seal.
October 4, 20169 yr I personally would rather remove a transmission. But then again that's because I've done that a dozen times. Whereas removing an engine, probably once. Edited October 4, 20169 yr by golucky66
October 4, 20169 yr Author That is the way I am leaning as well. If not only because I can have the tranny out to make sure the seal is seat ALL THE WAY in the housing. Sure wish I knew someone close with a transmission jack.
October 4, 20169 yr Make sure the shaft is lubed just a little so the seal doesn't roll. Make sure you don't push it in too far. And make sure it goes in flat and not crooked. Otherwise. I'm sure something minor happened. Just redo it and im sure you'll be fine
