Modus operandi 86 DL carburetted fuel system

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

My 86 1,8 wagon stopped a couple of days ago. It was sudden like fuel was cut off.

Fuel line from pump to carburettor is in order.

The little square external pump (are there any more?) is working, and electricity is reaching the pump. -But I was wondering, is the pump ment to run while the engine is running, or is it ment to run only when key is turned to start?

Thanks for any answers!

Some cars have a priming cycle, many dont. Either way in stock form the pump is meant to run when there is a tach pulse. So the answer to you question would be both during crank and engine running.

Thanks alot :)

Is there a possibility that  the pump is working -as in pumping out some fuel, but not working as it should - as in pumping the right amount of fuel at the right pressure?

With a voltmetre i see voltage in the lead that supplies the pump, when turning the key to start. This rules out electrical errors, am I right?

As far as I can see: the fuel lines are in order as said above, electricity is reaching the pump, but still the engine wont start. It will start on the other hand, when I pour gasoline directly down the carb. Runs just like it should for some seconds before dying again. Does that ruel out carb errors?

Thanks for any help

Take the fuel line off the carb and put it in a small container then crank the engine over for 10-15 seconds then go check for fuel in the container. If you have fuel, the problem is with the carb. If not, it's somewhere in the lines, pump or tank. Sounds to me like the anti-diesel solenoid on the front of the carb is not working. It's on the drivers side front corner of the carb and has one wire going to it. When the ignition is on, it gets 12 volts and opens to let fuel flow. When the ignition is off, it closes and stops fuel flow. It's not uncommon for the wire to break right at the solenoid. It could also just be bad. If it is bad, you can remove it, take the needle and spring out of it and re-install it. That will get you running again.

Alright will do. And check the solenoid on the carb. Thanks

Again as if in troublesome pump, should there be a clean stream of fuel out of the pipe or pulses when cranking?

If your getting some sort of flow of fuel then it would be enough to make the car run in some way. Skishop beet me to the cut off solenoid and its a good possibility. Stuck float inlet clogg etc. follow his tests.

Started testing now, now there was no fuel coming out of the fuel line.....

Fuel pump swapped, turns out it was faulty but functional enough to deliver some spurts accidentaly when I controlled it..

Thanks for all help!
