November 14, 20169 yr Hi, so my 2000 outback limited is having fog light issues. When I turn the fog light switch on, the indicator light doesn't turn on and the lights are receiving no voltage (tested with a voltmeter). I don't know all that much about wiring so any help would be appreciated but I did replace the fuse and it didn't help.
November 14, 20169 yr Did they work before? They only come on with low beams & go off if you switch to brights.
November 14, 20169 yr Author Yeah they worked this summer last time I used them then suddenly didn't. I've made sure that it wasn't that and the fuse was the next step in the chain as well as new bulbs but it still doesn't turn on, and i've exhausted my electrical knowledge.
November 14, 20169 yr Said you tested the at the lights for voltage , did you check at the switch also ?
November 14, 20169 yr Author No, I wasn't sure what wires to test as the switch is a closed plastic unit.
November 14, 20169 yr Author Just tested the wires leading to the switch, there is current to a purple wire (30v) and to a black wire( 10v) but there is no current when the switch is on. is it likely that the switch is fried somehow? the car has 109k on it if that helps.
November 15, 20169 yr There should be power leaving the switch after activating it. If not see if you can locate another switch to try, wrecking yard, your buddys car , the neighbor if their not home... lol
November 15, 20169 yr Purple wire is for the illumination bulb in the switch, has nothing to do with the fog lamps getting power. If the fog lights were dealer installed you should be able to follow the wires from the fog light switch to the fog light relay and test for power at the relay. If they were factory installed the relay should be in the fuse panel and you can try swapping it with another relay if there is a similar one in another spot. Often dealer installed lights are not tapped into the fog light fuse in the panel, they will just tap into wherever is closest for power like the cig lighter socket fuse or rear power outlet fuse, so be sure to check ALL of the fuses, not just the one for the fog lights.
November 15, 20169 yr Author Will do. I believe they are factory as the dash has a subaru factory fog light switch on it. I'll test the current but I think it is likely the switch seeing as the light doesnt illuminate when the switch is depressed even though there is power through that purple wire.
