Ej swap Question

Featured Replies

So in my Brat I have 2.2T. I have an Sti 5 speed. My question is how to make the speed-o work?

The 5 speed has the vss coming out of the tranny and I am not sure how to make this work.

I know someone mentioned that I had to connect up the vss to the dash of the ea.

Any advice?

Take the speed sensor out of the transmission. Put the brat speedo cable in its place. Pull the cluster out of the dash, there is a plug coming out of the back of the speedo. It has two wires in it, ground the black wire and connect the yellow one to the vss wire off the ecu.

I don't have the stock ea speed o cable. So can you get that from Rock Auto or do you have to get that from a Subie dealer???

Cool. Thx Bratman just ordered the speedo. So I have the dash cluster out and I have two plugs out of the back of the speedo. One white and blue and another plug, black and yellow with red stripe. So I am going with the black and yellow one like you said.

So once things are hooked up, with the Brat flash the ECS light in the dash for reading codes?

I'm not sure what the other plug goes to. I have one cluster with that coming out of it too. It's from an 87 ea81 hatch, the 83 carb and 84 turbo clusters I have don't have it. Maybe one of these days I'll pull the hatch cluster apart and find out lol.

I'm going to guess since you have the extra plug that you have an 85-87 brat, which should have a fully functional ecs light socket. You may have to add a bulb holder to the cluster, but the spot will be there. If I remember correctly you'll have to add a wire to pin 1 of one of the round plugs to run the wire from the ecu. If you need a pigtail for this I can send you one, I've got a couple spare harnesses laying around that I wouldn't care to scavenge some more from.

I have the spot and there is a bulb in it too. I took it out and shined a light and it is there. So I guess I will just splice one in with the wire already there in the round plug?

I will let you know if I need it; Thx. Start heating up the soldering gun.

Some of the carb models had an ecu, it used solenoids and witchcraft to control the mixture of the carb.

I don't believe so. I have been under the dash several times and I haven't ever found an ecu, but the Brat probably had option, I'm guessing. And I just confirmed, the door tag said made in 12/84; so it is an 85.

They may have made the harness more universal in those years, 80-84 all had little differences in wiring.

So asking for confirmation guys; once I splice in the ECS light in my dash to pin 1 of the round plug in the back of the dash, I take that to the plug for the 2.2T ECU, F47, pin 19; right?

That is what I am getting from the schematics.

Finally. I went to BBS.Legacy and they don't have the traffic like we do. I was just at NASIOC and came back and saw you answered.

Thx. Oh, got the speedo cable and she is in. Thx again.

Good deal. I ordered a few speedo cables after I found they were still available from the dealer lol. I intend on keeping my ea81 cars on the road for as long as humanly possible, I figure spares aren't a bad thing to have.

Something you might be able to help me with if you don't mind. I've been looking for as many options as I can for mounting the ej trans in an ea81 body, I've found a few ways that I like. How do you have your mount set up?

So here is what I did.

I mounted the trans. with a jack and looked to see where it needed a support and made one a then welded the support to be bolted in. Don't let it scare you. Just get the trans. up there and lay underneath and look and make yourself a drawing and start fabricating.

Of course once things are in I plan to go back and put some more support, gussets of steel here and there to make sure she is stiff.
