clutch break-in? '00Legacy164K-bought today on eBay

Featured Replies

Bought '00 Legacy GT on eBay today!! - hope I did right thing - item #2481520577 - looks great; high miles (164K!); paid $5,600; clean CarFax; only 1 warranty claim w/Subaru (headlight bulb @ 9,500 mi) - BUT... seller told me clutch had just been replaced, however, when I had friends go look @ it tonight (lived in same city), mechanic hadn't even looked @ car yet & would (prob.?) replace clutch tomorrow - questions:

* break-in procedure for new clutch?

* anything else he should do while apart (even if I have to pay)?

* advice? any other suggestions for new owner of high-mileage '00 Legacy?

P.S. Not total newbie - owned GL-10turbo before (new '86 owned 10 yrs.) loved it! & then Outback (new '96 owned 2 yrs) hated it - serv. probs. Trying again & HOPEFUL!! Thanks!!

I would have the mech for sure:

(1) Put new main rear oil seal in

(2) Replace shift fork boot

(3) Replace "oil separator plate" if PLASTIC or obviously leaking. This is BEHIND flywheel, so it needs to be removed, which it might be anyway, for resurfacing. This damned thing ($24 part) ruined my second (new) clutch disk by oiling the surface.

I would also probably replace the flywheel itself. Although yours might be OK. A resurfacing would be about $60-$70 anyhow -- and the latest revision may not be on your car. Go to or call a Subaru dealer. Get the part # on the NEW recommended flywheel and clutch disk and plate -- make sure the guy fixing the car uses THOSE PARTS.

Some of this info is HERE on this site if you have time to search for it.

Good luck!

Thanks - am getting cold feet here (& it's HOT in TN now) as friend went to mech. to check on it for me last night & now mech. is saying problem wasn't clutch after all. but may be FL wheel bearing!?! Not sure how a good mech. could confuse the 2?! Also, (1st mention) that check engine light is on - I'm hoping that's just the recall, but could be O2 or whatever - waiting for salesman to call this am. I will keep you FB for ref. & search site again - I have found lots of good info. here!! Have cashier's check in hand . . . cold feet, though.
