Hello Everyone,

I am an new forum member, and am looking for some help with my 98 Forester. It was my wife's car until we got her something new, and now I am, looking into fixing it up.

We bought the car with the single din radio/cassette. I just got a Subaru OEM 2 din 6-cd changer from e-bay. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5703639576&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1) I have been looking on-line for good instructions or shop manual on dis-assembly of the center console, but haven't found one. WHen I did this on my Miata, everything went smooth except for one hidden fastener on the center console that I broke. Can anyone point me to a good link for the 1st gen Forrester manual, or post good step by step instruction up to the point of accessing the radio mounting screws? I should be able to take the rest from there.

Thanks in advance... -Dave

take screws out of the cup holder...then some in the slot the ash tray goes in...that plate should come off...unscrew the bracket holding in the radio and that tray...or that is how it is in my Subes.

Crutchfield.com has instructions for different cars...might want to check them out.

Hi Dave,

I bought a brand new 6-disc underseat changer on ebay for $85, which was a perfect fit (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7907060162&category=43948, but the removal procedures are the same:

1)If AT, put shift lever to "1" position.

2)Disconnect Battery Ground Cable (Negative Terminal)

3)Remove console trim (there are two screws under the lid of the center console)

a)Engage parking brake.

b)Open center console cover and remove parking brake trim caps (2), phillips screws (2) and flat washers (2). Pull upward and back to remove parking brake trim.

c)Remove shift trim by pulling upward and back (You won't need to totally remove this part, just pull it back in order to remove the radio trim).

4)Remove radio trim

a)Remove ashtray.

b)Pull radio trim outward from the bottom and disconnect cigarette lighter or socket. This is the trickiest part: the bottom part will come out rather easily, but the there are two fasteners at the top, located on the sides at the climate control unit, that are a bit stubborn. It's a fragile piece so you will need to be careful about where you pull it - grasp on the sides of the trim b/t the top and the horizontal piece separating the climate control and the radio (which you should not pull on because it is so delicate) and firmly pull it straight out. It will come straight out with a firm tug. Good luck, and enjoy.

Guest lothar34

I swear I found a website with pictures back when I switched out my radio, but I can't seem to find it now.

Anyway, what hohieu said is correct.
