1996 Outback Wagon, AT sometimes when i turn key I cant press the shift button on side of shifter to get it in gear when I press the brake, also no start the release mechanism is not releasing, any ideas? Thnx

Sometimes they get gummed up with old grease/liquids.  Try getting access to it and clean and lube with some white lithium grease.  Could also be the brake switch going flaky.
