April 24, 20223 yr Hi, My name is Ian, I'm new to the forum and car building I picked up a running 1982 Subaru GLF with a 5 speed manual. Most everything works except the shifter moves up and down. I want to make it into a off-roading unit because of the amount of trails around my house. I'm hoping to covert it into a 4wd with a sc14/amr500 supercharged ea81 behind it. I a newbie to working on Subaru's and carbureted engine so I thought it would push me out of my comfort zone.
April 24, 20223 yr Welcome , wish I could post better news for you but my suggestion is to leave it , use it as intended , and try to just enjoy being in a true classic. And keep in mind that there are people out there , old farts to you probably , who would cherish a simplistic five speed with an 1800 engine normally aspirated. It’s an economical classic. Now the part you don’t want to hear. That engine just won’t accept all you wish to throw at it. I’m not going to take the time to explain but I’m confident someone else will explain why it’s just not going to happen. Converting it to 4WD is also going to be a chore. Best of luck. Enjoy your time with it.
