I took my 2.5 inch cat back off and installed a stock (except for gutted cats) exhaust with a stock style replacement muffler. So its very well been restored to factory-ness....

 

Yes, it quiet...does have a stock WRX'ish sound to it with all the other mods...pulls well in the midrange, although not quite as strong.

 

Throt. response is DOWN, and top end is pretty well out the window. *sigh* I'll be going back to loud next weekend i guess....

 

My idea for a high flow/no or low backpressure muffler that is quiet would be....a LARGE diameter inlet and outlet, with a large chamber that's low/no restriction wrapped in shredded high heat sound deadening material....or similar.
