hi every one i have 1988 gl wagon turbo i just changed the engine now when i put in the transmission did not want to seat at about 1/4" left so i turned the crank and bolted up when i went to start engine run and made a sound like spliens meshing and stoped also when i pulled engine the inner front shaft on trans came out with torque converter so put back in trans. thought i would say that. so when i put in gear car would not go till i reved up a bit its full of fulid and now it doesent move is it my torque converter or is there a vacume modulator on this? hope some one can help a new member.

i just pulled engine back out and the torque converter aft side of flange has blueing and looking inside trans around shaft looks like loose snap ring also is there notches that torque converter goes in.

Never ever try to force the tranny onto an engine! Sounds like you f'd that tranny up. I would just go out and find another tranny at a parts yard or Pull-A-Part. Subaru stuff is cheap, fiddling with autos is a pain in the rump roast. The transmission you need must be out of another turbo car as well. It sounds like you have the 2wd 3speed auto? If thats the case find a manual turbo tranny and do a swap. :brow: the 3spd autos suck.

hi my traney is a 4speed auto full time 4wheel dive and is the inner shaft on traney made to come out with torque converter thanks again

Well, the shaft does come out but it should be installed prior to bolt up. What you did was break the front pump drive gear. The trans has to come apart to fix this. If you get another trans make sure you install the shaft sleeve first. There is a clip that goes with it also. Also make sure the torque convertor is installed completely before you install the trans. You have probably the worst Subaru trans to deal with as far as installation goes. Very heavy and long which makes a bad combination. A tranny shop can replace the gear easy enough. But without the correct tools and trans tear down and reassembly experience you'll never get it back together should you attempt this.

 

BTW, I had this happen once. I have rebuilt transmissions before and it took me two days to replace the gear and get it back in the car.
