August 9, 200421 yr Hey all! I hope this post finds everyone in good spirts Anyhow, down to business. Today my 1995 Impreza 2.2l automatic with 103,000 miles refused to start today after I drove to the store. It had started fine before I went, then 10 minutes after I stopped it it would not start. Nothing was coming on, no clicking, ect....My first thoguht was battery and eventhough it is 2 years old it hasn't been snowing signs of slow crankover or anything bad. The terminals had a little corrosion on them but I quickly cleaned that off with some setlzer water. After I did that, it started to click when I turned the key but still, nothing was happening. I finally got a jump start, and while it was slow to crank, it did start. So on the ride home there is now a "whine" when the transmission is rowing through the gears. My radio also "cut out" a few times on the ride, and the idle was shakey (but not bad cam/crank sensor shakey) at stop signs. So I park the car (won't restart), and go back out to it a few hours later to mess around with it. It starts no problem this time, however, now my AT TEMP light flashes 16 times then goes off. I have done some searching and reading of old threads on the board and it seems that that means the duty solenoid has gone bad. Thats a whole lot of $$ isn't it (happy birthday to me weeeeeeeeeeeee!) !?!? So cliffnotes: 1)wouldn't start (seems to now) 2)radio cuts out 3)transmission whine 4)shakey idle at stops 4)AT TEMP light flashes 16 times So, any ideas? I have a 167 piece mechanics tool set from Sears, decent conceptual understanding, and a bank account that I'm trying to build up so I can move into an apartment. Thanks all Kevin
August 10, 200421 yr Author I couldn't wait around any longer so I droped it off to get looked at. I had to use the Outback to jump start it as it would not start again. Another interesting note...the radio only shuts off when I use the brake! hahahaha this is funny stuff
August 10, 200421 yr hey kev.....sounds pretty weird.....might be just a bad battery. A buddy had one go last week in his civic....got some weird things happening...it was all of a sudden. Got a new battery and all was good.
August 10, 200421 yr Did you measure the battery voltage? If it's too low, ECU (& TCM) cannot operate. Batteries are known to die suddenly sometimes. Get a new one. You might get credit for the 2 y.o. battery under warranty, even if pro-rated. A battery usually costs less than having the car "looked at", too.
