another cruise control query

Hi folks

We just bought my mother-in-law's 97 Legacy LSi sedan. (2.5L automatic) It is in very good condition - only 48,000 miles on it. The plan is to do whatever light maintenance it needs and then give it to my own mother, who desperately needs a good car.

Anyway, the only problems it has are: 1) an unreliable fuel gauge (it's going to the dealer tomorrow for that) and 2) a non-working cruise control. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the cruise. The fuse is good, and the light on the dash turns on. When I presss the little lever to engage the c/c, I hear a small click from down below the dash. Also another click when I disengage it. However, it does nothing.

A mechanic quickly looked at it, and pulled the vacuum hose off of the pump (i think it's a pump), and sucked on the hose, and said that the hose wasn't the problem. Maybe the pump? Maybe the switch for the brakes?

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'd like to get the car to 100% before giving it to my mom.

Thanks!

How is the gas tank acting up? If it always reads empty then fill it up all the way...until gas is almost overflowing...that fixed mine. If it is acting up in that when you have a half tank you really have more...get used to it :-p Most newer Subarus are like that.

The gauge often drifts around, sometimes going to below "E", even when the tank is nearly full. I'm guessing bad sending unit.

No clues about the cruise control? Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? :-)

Thanks!

My CC wasn't working...I replaced EVERYTHING

You know what it was?...the little plastic/rubber thing that pushes the button the on the clutch thing...so it though my clutch was always down and would not engauge. If you have a manual, check that...and if not, the brakes have one, too.

If you need CC parts I have working cruise parts from a 95 Legacy for sale. :D
