Snorkelektomy?

Featured Replies

This may be a silly question to some of you, but a guys gotta learn somehow. What is a snorkelektomy and what are some of the theoretical pros and cons?

It usually refers to two things. One is removing all of that bent plastic tubing from your air box to the fender away and replacing it with something more direct. It takes improves airflow and produces more noise when you accelerate.

There other is in newer Imprezas some people have added an elbow to their throttle body to raise the airbox, removed the hood scoop backing and cut the back of the airbox off to let air come in from there.

You are pretty much guaranteed to throw a Check engine light afterwards.

Look around NASIOC or RS Club in the n/a tuning part for more info.

see, i thought that it was when you take the intake and set it outside of the body (like, near the roof) so the if you were to go through puddle or a creek, the engine wouldn't get full of water and stall out. see what i'm saying?

My understanding of a SNORKUSECTOMY (which was performed on my T-leg on sunday) is removing the fender liner, and pulling the ginormous plastic tank that sits in there for the purpose of sound deadening. Removing my snorkus made my stock exhaust sound beastly, made my turbo louder, and made my blow off valve audible. Also, it could just be in my head, but it seems the car pulls more above 80, but i've only had it past 80 like 4 times since i bought it.

Well, the "ectomy" part of the word means "remove", so it doesn't involve adding anyhting. ALthough I do see what you mean about adding a real snorkel on serious off-road machines!

On my butt-dyno, there did seem to be more high end power. I noticed that low end power did suffer a bit. A cat back exhaust helps get that low end power back.

Just remember to keep all of those bits and pieces when you do this so that when you have to smog the car you don't have to scour the internet for them like I did.
