August 31, 200421 yr I know how a turbo works, but exactly when does boost occur in certain situations.. When does the turbo kick in after starting out from a stand still? Does it occur at a certain engine RPM or when the tranny is in a certain gear? Let's say you are cruising at highway speeds, keeping a steady RPM. Is the turbo running at boost, or not? If the turbo doesn't run at steady RPM's, would it kick on when you start climbing a hill to give extra power rather than downshifting an auto tranny? I'm trying to see if there's a difference in power response between a 2.5 Turbo and a 3.0 H6. RCoaster
August 31, 200421 yr pretty sure it kicks in after 3000 rpms That's true of the WRX but the Outback I think is much lower like the Forester XT...with that said I haven't driven an Outback XT so....FWIW
August 31, 200421 yr On my 91 Legacy Turbo the boost starts coming on at 2500 rpm when I'm accelerating and is usually going strong by 3000rpm. How much boost I get depends on close my petal is the floor When I'm driving at steady speed on the highway the boost generally doesn't occur no matter what my rpm is but as soon as I start to accelerate to say pass or climb a hill it immediently comes on strong, and the tranny will allow the turbo to increase the boost before it decides if it needs to downshift for more power.
August 31, 200421 yr It's somewhere around 2500 to 3000 on the Imprezas, probably similar on a Forester. Of course mine comes on at about 1500 now.
August 31, 200421 yr i've only done one drive in a Forester XT but i'm pretty darn sure that kicked in about 1200rpm.....that and they're suprising light weight is I think how they get such suprising 0-60 times. That was months ago though....might be wishful thinking on my part
