WRX cylinder misfiring...HELP!

Featured Replies

OK. I am beginning to think this is a stupid question...but what the heck..

I own a 2002 WRX wagon. Love the car - but the engine light has been working overtime. Originally, I had it serviced and was told cylinder 1 C had misfired. They (sub. service techs) re-set the computer...but, every 250-300 miles it likes to come on again. This has been ongoing ... at least a half dozen times - over the past 6 months. I am starting to get really irritated :-\ - never sure if the light means really serious problems - or, just the darn cylinder again. Is this car a lemon? Why do the techs keep re-setting it...only to have the light re-appear? They told me last time (this past friday) that it was too soon to replace spark plugs. As you may have guessed I am a relative Subaru rookie - so, I need to know how to speak knowledgably to the service people (sometime I feel like they are just doing the minimum to get a stupid woman out of they service area). Anyone else having these problems with their WRX? Looking for some advice...with only about 6000 miles left on my warrenty - I am concerned this could be an indicator of bigger problems. Any help would be appreciated...

Can you feel the engine missfire? it could be an overactive knock sensor.

Does the engine missfire all the time? or only when you get low on fuel?

If they have checked everything and it checks out ok . Then it may be a fasle indication by the ECM , there is an updated ECM for early production 2002 WRX for false missfire codes

Get the dealer to check with SOA

That is actually a campaign for that. Will cost nothing in theory for the dealer to do it. They send the ECU off to get it reflashed and you should have a turn-a-round of 4 days at MAX...could have back in 2 days tho.

Hey! Thanks to all who replied to my earlier post.

As it happened I was visiting family 300+ miles from home. The drive through mountains with the glaring*check engine* light was not a soothing sight. Spent many a minutes considering trading it in for another model - just love this car! So, I want to give it one more try...I plan to visit the dealership first thing tomorrow. Will let y'all know the results...stay tuned!
