Horse Power

Featured Replies

Well, yes, from the Germans or Italians you'd expect around 160bhp from a 2.2, and probably 260bhp from Honda ;-)

Even so, it pulls well from 2500rpm to 6500rpm, don't you think? Better a nice even spread of torque, with good throttle response, than some 9000rpm VTEC that's dead below 5000rpm.

Oh, the low stress also means that an EJ22 will go over 200k miles without wincing.

Not one of the ej22s in our family went below 200,000 miles. But you have to remeber single over head cam, and no varible valve timing. Dosent subaru put out a 2 liter non turbo that puts out 190 horse, becasue of the varible valve timing and high compresion pistons. I bet if you port and polished the head and put some high compresion pistons and did all that small stuff you could get it up to around 200 horse. Also ive seen many very low output Italian engines that put out less power per liter and require higher octane.
