Can someone describe the ignition timing procedure for an EA82 SPFI? My manual describes "making sure the idle switch is on" and "connecting the ECU". Can someone elaborate on these?

don't know about the idle switch, but the ECU part refers to connecting a couple of wires in the engine compartment. other than that all you need to do is hook up your timing light, loosen your disty and twist the disty one direction or another to advance or retard your timing

Thanks, but it's the specifics of the "connecting a couple of wires" that I need.

 

The manual indicates that for non-carbureted EA82's the "idle switch" should be set to on or the timing will not be correct. I'm thinking that this is the idle sensor but I'm looking for confirmation of this and also exactly how to set the thing to "on".

The wires you are looking for have

GREEN colored connectors.

Each connector has a single

wire, one male, one female.

You will find them in front of the driver's side hood hinge. (SPFI fuel injection only)

The idle switch is inside the throttle position sensor and which is connected to the throttle shaft.

NOTE: if this has not been adjusted and the car is idling well, it will be automaticly closed at idle and is not to be of a concern.

Remember to disconnect the green connectors when through.

What do you do if you only have one green connecter by the hinge? I have 2 clear single pin ones, but only one green one. The computer displays codes through the little LED all the time that the engine is running. Does this mean that my right connecters are always connected, and if so, where do I disconnect them? My car is a SPFI too, model year 1992.

Thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out after reading through the posts and going back through the repair manual I have (Chilton, which I wouldn't recommend btw.)

 

Now that I've set the timing to spec's I have this mighty ping @ freeway speeds though.
