October 10, 200421 yr I have a 2000 Subaru Forester AWD Automatic which flashed the AT Oil Temp light at me while I was on the road. Now this morning, I drained off a few quarts of AT fluid because it smelled burnt. Then I added a few quarts. The light has stayed off since yesterday ... but now: 1. Do I check the AT levels while it's running in neutral? OR 2. Do I check it with the engine off? Any help greatly appreciated!
October 10, 200421 yr To check AT fluid level, warm up the trans/car to normal operating temp. Park on level surface, cylce the gear shifter slowly from park to 1 and then back to park, leave car running, and then check fluid level

What a bad time for a typo to creep in! ---> PARK <--- It should have read "... and then back to PARK,..." ATF levels are checked like Legacy777 said, but check is done in PARK for safety reasons. October 10, 200421 yr Author you know, i actually figured it was a typo and automatically sort of substituted the word park ... but APPRECIATE SO MUCH all the info ... and especially the wishes for a safe ride home ... keep your fingers crossed, indeed! THANK YOU! betsy
October 12, 200421 yr Are you towing with your forrester, or live in extremely hilly terrain? Seems kind of odd to me that the AT fluid shows signs of burning on a vehicle this new. I would drain it again and do another refill to get more fresh fluid into it.
October 12, 200421 yr and she can get the oil and tranny filter changed at her leisure. I agree it would not be good to flash codes on such a new car.
