Checking At Fluid???

Featured Replies

I have a 2000 Subaru Forester AWD Automatic which flashed the AT Oil Temp light at me while I was on the road. Now this morning, I drained off a few quarts of AT fluid because it smelled burnt. Then I added a few quarts. The light has stayed off since yesterday ... but now:

1. Do I check the AT levels while it's running in neutral? OR

2. Do I check it with the engine off?

Any help greatly appreciated!

To check AT fluid level, warm up the trans/car to normal operating temp. Park on level surface, cylce the gear shifter slowly from park to 1 and then back to park, leave car running, and then check fluid level

YIKES!!! What a bad time for a typo to creep in!

---> PARK <--- It should have read "... and then back to PARK,..."

ATF levels are checked like Legacy777 said, but check is done in PARK for safety reasons.

you know, i actually figured it was a typo and automatically sort of substituted the word park ... but APPRECIATE SO MUCH all the info ... and especially the wishes for a safe ride home ... keep your fingers crossed, indeed!:)

THANK YOU!

Are you towing with your forrester, or live in extremely hilly terrain? Seems kind of odd to me that the AT fluid shows signs of burning on a vehicle this new.

I would drain it again and do another refill to get more fresh fluid into it.

and she can get the oil and tranny filter changed at her leisure. I agree it would not be good to flash codes on such a new car.
