Front wheel bearing replacement

Featured Replies

How hard is this? I have a 90 Legacy wagon AWD with a bad bearing in the right front (Hmm Maybe that CV Joint wasnt Bad!) Front wheel has about a half inch of Wobble at the top of the tire so its a must to replace it.

You'll need a hydrolic press to get out the old bearings and replace the new. Personally, I'd take the hub assembly apart myself, take that to a mechanic and watch him do the swap so you learn how he does it. Well, first I'd get a quote for just the bearing replacement only and the full job and compare.

If you do the whole thing yourself, be careful when you press out the old bearings so you don't damage the tone wheel.

I had one shop tell me $78 for labor and the other I called is quotuing me 2 and 1/2 hours at $75 an hour. and thats just to press the bearing out and the new one in!

T-bone,

I had to do front wheel bearings on both my "93 and my "97 and did what JT95 recommended, pulled the hub and had my local NAPA machine shop do the bearing change, $25 bucks. Again, as JT95 mentioned, if your car has ABS, what out for the tone ring as they are very, very fragile.

Good luck.

Speaking of ABS. My carfax report says that my car has ABS but i can find no evidence of such. And NO I am not about to drive like a bat out of ___ and then slam on the brakes to see if it will lock up. Those are brand new tires. I really can't find a pump/motor assembly.

The ABS control brain-box should be on the front, right side of your engine bay--against the inner fender. (It'd be on your left if you are standing in front of the car looking under the hood.) Or, get on the ground and look at your hub assembly--is there a thick black wire going to a plug. Here's a pic of it off the car:

Here's another pic of the tone wheel and ABS sensor:
