Transmission swap

Featured Replies

I am looking to swap automatic transmissions in my '87 GL-10 Turbo wagon. I have the cursed fluid leaking from the transmission into the transaxle. I was told that there is a seal that goes bad that causes this. I have been pumping fluid back into the transmission every so often in order to drive the car.

There are many Subes in the salvage yard near me. There are GL-10s, regular wagons and Loyales. I am wondering which transmissions will fit my car - up to what year and model, does non-turbo matter or is the case that it will work as long as it is an automatic? I want ot get the latest year with the fewest miles. Did Subaru do anything to fix the problem in later year transmissions? Not being able to drive the car on the salvage yard, I am sure I am taking a risk but how do I minimize my risks in selecting a transmission?

Thanks to the best message board on the Web for any help, ideas and tips on making the swap.

Any of the 3AT trannies from cars with the same bidy style will fit. I have been told the turbo trannies are stronger, but no hard proof to back that up.

Its hit and miss buying a tranny from a yard that everyone knows is already problematic. Check the governor, smell the fluids to make sure they aren't burnt.

Personally, I would put in a 5 speed. Thats what I did with my 87 GL-10 TurboWagon.. it used to be an auto too :)

Thanks for the tip. I might consider replacing my AT with a 5sp except for the fact that my wife may drive the car so an AT is most desirable.

I can pretty much expect the same body style AT to fit but I am wondering is sat a Loyale wagon's trans will work also. I don't have access to part numbers for this trans but I am sure that someone has numbers that show what years will work. Thanks
