Rough Idle after engine swap

Featured Replies

After my '98 OBW blew the head gasket (for the second time) I decided to replace the motor. So, I just sunk about $1700 into a used yard motor with about 60k. The engine had everything on it except the A/C and alternator (used mine on the car). Also looks like the motor may be from a newer car, cuz the timing tensioner looks very different from mine.

Anyway, motor in and started but at idle it's VERY rough. It also feels a little like a miss? Once you get going it feels better, but I still sense that miss?

Other details:

  • no smoke,
  • no overheating,
  • swapped coil packs from original motor - no change,
  • swapped wires from original motor (except #4 which I broke) - no change
  • checked for vac leaks but didn't find any... yet,
  • sprayed some carb cleaner around intake, no idle changes,
  • no engine lights,
  • gets a little worse with lights and/or A/C on,

My thoughts:

  • Engine did have a damaged Timing cover, I used my orig.. but didn't check to see if the gears were lined up ( i know pretty stupid after having it all off),
  • IAC
  • TPS
  • Injectors (didn't seem so from reading other posts)

Calling all Subaru Gurus, please help.
