Oil leak; under driver's dash

Featured Replies

I am hoping that someone out there has some insight into this problem. My wife has a 1995 Impreza with 135K miles. Recently, she discovered a leak (looks and smells like oil) coming from under the dask and dripping down onto her ankle as she drives. We have had the Impreza at the dealer two separate times to look into this, but they can find no source for the leak. They say someone must have sprayed something up there which is now dripping, but we know that this never occurred.

Any thoughts as to what this leak might be and how we can stop it?

Thanks for your help!

You will need ideas coming from many sources on this.

Here's my two cents: something similar hapened to me a while back when I removed a vac gauge I had installed on my former Loyale. There was oil in the hose connecting to the gauge. This hose passed under the dash.

Conclusion: maybe some vac hose under the dash (heater or ac controls?) has oil in it (maybe bad PCV valve) and is leaking at a connection. Do you have other symptoms?

Get the dealer to check the speedo cable for oil , although I have not had a Subaru do this I have had other makes pump oil from the speedodrive in the trany up the cable and leak out at the speedo head

I would nip the problem in the bud pronto becuase this could be a safety threat. If someone were to get it on their shoe and then go to hit the brake....see what I mean. I wish you good luck and I hope someone on here can point you in the right direction. Check the speedo..
