November 12, 200421 yr our 2001 forester has had brake squeeling for some time now...two weeks ago i replaced the front pads and now the rear are really squeeling....with around 40,000 miles should the rear already be worn??? is there a problem with the braking system that i don't know about??? are they too small, inadequite for the car like gm and there barkes on their vans and suv's??? thanks matt
November 12, 200421 yr My 99 Forester has drums and 40,000 miles would be ok for rear drums on a Forester. I would expect more from discs. Why don't you just pull a wheel and see what's going on?
November 13, 200421 yr Author rear drums go bad that quick??? what am i looking for when i do pull them apart
November 15, 200421 yr left on your brakes, and if your drums are scored. The good part might be that sometimes the rear brakes will squeal with plenty of lining left. If it were mine and I was going to look I would change the shoes and lube it as you have already done half the work jacking it up.
November 15, 200421 yr Does your Forester have Drums or Discs in the rear? My '01 Forester is an L - (now with 80+K) and has had squeeky brakes since about 25k. The rear brakes are fine, but they glaze. I've been told that it might have something to do with water crossings.
November 15, 200421 yr any brake can glaze and squeak. As long as you have lining left you are fine. At 40,000 it should be inspected to see if you have any left.
November 16, 200421 yr Author thanks for the imput when i get a chance this coming weekend to pull them apart you'll probably be hearing more from me... thanks again:cool:
November 16, 200421 yr One trick I have learned, is to switch sides with the drums and rotors this will help to get the glaze off, just brake easy the first few times like you do when replacing pads or shoes.
November 16, 200421 yr I'll have to try that next time. Usually I empty the brake dust, change the shoes and go for it. I prefer to use new drums, but that's not always possible.
