redkard4
I have found a 91 legacy for sale. I have not seen it yet or talked with the owner, but the ad says high mileage and they are asking $700 neg. I own a 90 loyale ea82 which leaks oil (i think they all do). My question is do the legacy motors (ej22?) leak oil as bad as the ea82's? Are they reliable engines? I don't know if it is an auto. or man. transmission, but should I stay away from one or the other? Thanks for any input.

You can see from my signature how many I have owned so I know first hand how much leaking a ea82 does. The ej22 is imo the 2nd best engine subaru has ever made. (ej22t best) The only issues the ej22 usually have is cam seals and occasionally oil pumps, but unlike the ea82 pump, the ej22 has a simple o-ring that can be replaced and it will go for a long time. I like the 5spd better but the autos are fine.
coloradosubarules
I have a 90 legacy with the same engine and tranny. A few months ago I had to remove the oil pump to install a new O-ring, seal, and tighten the screws in it. I also did the timing belt while I had it off. just be aware that Subaru suggests that you replace the timing belt every 60K miles. I have 238K on mine and it runs great. Enjoy your new Roo.
