My Check Engine has at random intervals been turing itself off while I am driving the car. A quick glance at the ECU LED shows no activity when this happens. After a mile or two the light will then come on again.

 

At first I thought, great, means that whatever it is is still working half the time, but apparently that light should only go away when the codes are officially cleared. Anyone know of this phenomenon?

Id just focus on what the code is when the CEL is on. What you are saying might make a lot of sense once you know what the code is.
