Thx Zingo(A new member) It should come on when car is started, then go out. If it flashes after start up, that means there are trouble codes stored in TCM memory.
December 24, 200421 yr Author Hi Thanks for responding. The light blinks at startup 16 times and hasn't come on while driving at all. I did attempt the handshack procedure with no results and was wondering if it works only with certain models. Is the 16 blinks a code and how can I find out if it is critical at this point or can we drive the car and have it looked at later. Someone posted that this indicates a problem with the torque converter. Is this true? Thx
December 25, 200421 yr My kids 98 Legacy did the same 16 blinks most of the time on startup, once in awhile, It would go away for a few starts and come back. He had duty solenoid C failure which is common. There's a lot on this board if you do a search, but basically that is the valve the transmission brain controls to proportion torque to from front to back in the AWD system. It can be a wiring problem or a connector, but it seems to always be the valve itself, which is in the very back of the transmission. It's not real bad to fix, a couple hours labor and the part, but is almost always a dealer performed service. If the solenoid was always on, you would have FWD only, but since it fails to being always off, you would now have a constant transfer of torque to the rear, which will probably cause a jerkiness when making tight turns on pavement. I would search over other posts regarding duty c solenoid for more info.

January 11, 200521 yr i have the same problem. AT oil temp light flashes 16 times when I start. I have ignored it till now. I hope it is not a serious problem.

Yo, Zingo, Welcome to USMB, we were all new members once... :-) In case you haven't gotten this fixed yet, your symptoms are a road I went down some months ago and wrote the full details about it at "AWD binding problem solved in '96 Legacy with transfer case solenoid replacement." Apparently, 16 blinks of the AT temp light just means "Hey, pay attention to me" but it isn't more meaningful than that.
