My first Subaru - 2000 OB Ltd. I've migrated from Volvos (current backup has 283k and going strong). The OB had 106k at purchase two months ago. Nice car. I checked out the head gasket issue - no sign of problems at inspection, although the expansion tank level is down a little after 4500 miles. Coolant conditioner wasn't done until 93k per the sticker (or does this mean it was last done then since you have to do it with each coolant flush?). Also, there is a slight tick intermittently when warming up. Not there at all some days, goes away after a few minutes otherwise. From past experience, sounds like a lifter. Am considering a flush prior to next oil change.

So, can I get this thing to outlast my Volvo?

When was the last timing belt change? Keep up with maintenance - t/belt change, oil and filter... - and you should get 250k or more. Welcome to the board.

Get your oil changed and your tires rotated every 3K miles or 3 months (whichever comes first), and it'll probably outlast you. Routine maintenance is the key. BTW, welcome from a fellow relatively new user. I drive a 2001 Forester L.

Hi everyone -

Thanks to whoever is responsible for creating this resource - it has already saved me a lot of questions and money!

My Subaru is a 1999 Legacy Outback. Nothing fancy - but it's a great car.

I've had minimal problems with it even without closely following the suggested maintenance schedule. Just lucky I guess.

Anyway - I just wanted to post a message to say hello and thanks!
