Power steering conversion 84 brat

Featured Replies

Hi,Still new here, have a ea81 brat project starting, dropped the whole powertrain out the bottom.Auto trans which needs rebuilding will be scrapped unless anyone needs one.getting a manual trans,ea81 will get some goodys, want to convert to power steering.I was told to make sure that the pass side head has the mounting holes for the pump bracket.I looked and I do see 3 threaded holes.I guess Im safe with this head, does anyone know this for sure? Also ,is the subframe/crossmember the same so the power rack will fit correctly? Excuse my ignorance on this subject.Ive been a gm tech for years now and just recently got into old subarus,Im so bored working on cars but the subaru is different And interesting and Im actually looking foward to this project. Thanks

I did a power steering conversion on my brat, the cross membors have a slight diffrence that I saw. I was hoping to swap the rack my self, but Had to just put the whole cross membor in. The fluid Lines have a bracket thats bolted to the crossmembor. On the none power steering cross membors, there are no holes or threads for the bolts holding the bracket, and there are also no slots for the PS lines to go through. I'm sure if you wanted to cut and weld it can be done. But I found it easier to just swap crossmembors, because they're only held in place by 4 bolts. I managed to do it with the engine still in the car infact. With 2 floor jacks, and carefull lifting of the moter about an inch.

Basically, theres 4 bolts holding the cross membor to the frame. one bolt on each side for each control arm. Engine Mounts (2 bolts) and the exhaust y-pipe might get in your way, so you might want to pull that off too, (6 bolts). I spent a total time of 90 minutes doing the swap. Works Great. Hope this information is helpful.
