Help, burning oil losing power

Featured Replies

HI i got a 1996 legacy gt 2.5 i have had nothing but problems with the car i just had the head gasket done the heads replained new waterpump new timing belt new crankshaft seal new radiator plugs wires etc... and now the car seems to burn about a half qt a week and when im driving i feel hesitation like the car wnts to go but something is holding it back . i can feel a buck in it when im taking off almost like a turbo like the car when it hits a certain rpm its just takes off can anyone help me on this ive spent about 2500 hun on this car and dont want to spend no more HELPPPPP..

Is there an oil leak burning against hot exhaust or the engine burning oil(blue-grey smoke out the tail pipe) .

If it is oil leak, head gasket replacement workmanship - seals or oil pump or valve cover gaskets.

If engine is burning oil, too bad - can be piston rings or valve guides/seals. Did they do a valve job when head gaskets were replaced ? - could be a problem there....A bad PCV valve I believe can cause the problem too, creating too much oil pressure

Is there a Check Engine Light?

I read somewhere on the forum that bad ignition coil can cause hesitation problems at low rpm. Do some search and check the coil for correct resistance.

ye there is alittle smoke that comes from the talepipe not all the time though just when i gun it and yes they did do a valve job when i had the head gasket replaced. if it is the rings how much time do i have i mean as long as i keep oil in it . the car should be alright i think...could the hesitation be oil blowing by

Same thing happened to me and the cure was a new key I got from the dealer with the car's vin number. Not expensive. I then got copies at Walmart. Maybe it'll work for you also. Good luck!

Was the car burning oil before the head gasket job ? If not, and if it started loosing oil right after head gasket job and they did do a valve job, bad valve job is a good candidate for burning oil. Take it back to the shop that did it.

PCV valve takes engine oil fumes out of the engine. If PCV valve is stuck, these fumes build up pressure, leaking oil into cylinders and burning it. It is 3 bucks to buy and easy to replace...Ignition coil is where all the four spark plug wires meet under the hood!

Couple questions:

1) Did the car overheat significantly when you blew the headgaskets?

2) Did a lot of coolant get into the cylinders (i.e. billowing white smoke) when you blew the headgaskets?

1) If so, you could have warped the block or even slightly cracked it, which will allow all kinds of fluids to get in places they're not supposed to be.

2) If my understanding of Subaru engines is correct, they are all a wet-sleeve design, which means that the piston sleeves are coated with a thin layer of oil which helps the rings seal. If a large amount of coolant goes through those cylinders, it could wash away that oil seal causing your rings to no longer seal properly.

This is what I've gathered from various sources with little credibility. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
