Greetings, I have a 2003 OBW limited with 23000 miles on it. It comes with larger rotors. I have the 4 rotors cut by the dealer at 380 miles. Then the fronts at 17000 miles. I just had the front rotors replaced at 21000. When the brakes heat up and you reduce speed from 50+ you can feel a noticable shimmy. Am I missing somthing else?

 

Brake pads?

Calipers?

contamination?

Could the wheel surface be out of wack and warping the rotors?

Have you had your tires checked for balance or maybe a seperated belt?

If you are runnning OE brake pads and rotors, I wouldn't suspect these parts. If you are using GreenStuff or some other "fast road" pad, I would not hesitate to blame them.

 

I suggest removing the wheels and cleaning the mating surface between wheel and rotor - ideally, you should also remove the rotor and clean the rotor/hub interface, but let's assume this was done when the rotors were changed.

 

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the lug nuts are tightened gradually with a torque wrench. 95-100Nm should be plenty. Uneven and over tightened lug nuts can easily produce brake vibes.

you should still be in warranty (right?), so you should take it to the dealer and have it documented and have him work it out. you want to have a paper trail of this problem, so that if your warranty runs out, you will still be able to show them that it has never been fixed, even when it was under warranty...

did you bed in the new brakes when you got them?

 

or did you just start driving?

 

does the shimmy only occur under braking?

A poor Mating surface sounds promising combined with any amount of torque could warp the rotor. I'll go out and check their work with my torque wrench. I did ask them to double check the spec and hand tighten. Who knows.

Warrenty - Yes its documented to this point. I just couldn't believe the new rotors didn't fix the problem.

I just started driving but I did try to go easy for the 1st 200 miles. Yes it only occurs while braking.

I have the same problem. It started vibrating like 3 weeks ago. I replaced brake pads 2 weeks ago - the vibration didn't go away. The interesting thing is that vibration didn't go away after I did rotation. Could anyone give me some advice?
