How much should I pay to have the inner boots replaced on my 95 Legacy awd wagon? What about split boots? cost? reliability???

 

Get a new half shaft. By the time you pay for the boots and labor, you can put in a new half shaft. I would not use split boots, they are junk IMHO.

I paid around 170 for mine. A new shaft ($110) and labor, a little over 1/2 hour.

I've used split boots before and found them to serve their purpose, which is to prolong the inevitable axle replacement.

 

I like to think of them as band aids for a deep cut: they may stop the bleeding but they won't fix the problem. As most will say it's just better to replace the axle with a rebuilt.
