How best to clean IAC?

Featured Replies

Heard about the Idle Air Control Valve (that round bar at the front of the throttle body) being a common problem, causing weird idle. After taking one at a local junkyard apart (my car is a daily driver) I see that it has a motor on the left side, and a hollow tube with a rod and spring at the other. I'm wondering how I can get in there to clean everything out. Is there a way to dissemble it or should I just spray in some carb cleaner and hope for the best?

When I cleaned the one on my wifes loyale, I used vice grips to break loose the screws. Then I took the whole thing out and hit it pretty good with carb cleaner.

I'd imagine you could just hit with carb cleaner while it's still in though.

But don't you need to wipe off the surface after you've sprayed it with any kind of solvent? Does breaking it down by itself already help?
