I have a chance of getting a clean 1995 FWD Auto Legacy Wagon. This car has never seen winter and has only 55,000 kilometers on the engine. I now own a beater 1990 AWD Auto Sedan. It needs too much work for what I'm willing to spend. I need a new car and am seriously considering this car. Looks and runs great, drives as new, and it's is $6000.00 CDN

Any opinions?

If you don't mind it doesn't have AWD, and it's in good shape, I'd say go for it if you need a new car.

Well, I'm torn. It is a great car, and I would love to have AWD. The problem is, up here in Canada, they tend to run quite high in the price range. I could get a 1998 AWD Brighton for $7900 CDN with 186,000 Kilometers. It just seem so much for so many km's. I have 183,000 Km's on my 1990, the way I see it I'd be paying $7900 for a "body". I do love AWD though. I will go and get my mechanic to look at it tomorrow and if all goes well, it looks like I will buy it. Tell me, does the FWD 2.2L engine still have the same "bulletproof" rating? As well, is there anything in particular that I should be aware of with FWD in this era for upcoming problems, etc?

The FWD cars are identical in terms of engine, reliability, etc. The only difference is the transmission, rear drivetrain, and suspension.

 

My car was FWD for most of it's life....and I had about 178k miles on it before I swapped, so I'd say it's pretty reliable.

I did an AWD & 5spd conversion on my legacy.

 

To convert it to AWD, I had to swap over the hubs, struts, rear crossmember, add rear differential, add rear drive line, swap out the transmission to an AWD 5spd transmission, as well as swap transmission crossmembers.

I just registered to this message board and found a lot helpfull info about subarus.

 

I own 95 2.0l AT FWD Legacy Wagon 2 months. I bought it cheaper than all others 95 AWD cost. I'm thinking about FWD conversion to AWD and don't matter AT or MT. This toppic is very helpfull for me. Now I coud count how much this conversion will cost me.

By the way, there are a lot of cheep cars from UK (RHD) for wrecking. So it's possible to buy all I need for conversion.

Yeah you should be able to convert over to AWD relatively easily. You will need a new tranny, but all the wiring "should" be there.
