86 rx stalls when warm

Featured Replies

I have an 86 rx that is having an extremely annoying habit of intermittantly stalling on the morning drive to work. after it dies it won't start for about 15 to 20 minutes. I have no tach bounce when I try to start it. I checked power and ground to the coil and it has both but still won't start. All the wires look to be in good shape. Would a coil fail on a cold day? I jumpered my computer and can hear the fuel pump running and I replaced my fuel filter. The distrubtor and cap look fine with no moisture. My other grounds look good but ?. When she runs she runs fine. It's kind of an all or nothing thing. Any suggestions?

You need to verify that you have spark while this is happening. There may be an intermittant problem with the pickup loop. It sounds like the coil is ok but it may be intermittant also. If you have voltage on the minus side of the coil while this is occuring then it is ok.

sometimes when the ignition amplifier goes bad it will fail when it warms up, let it cool and is ok. the ignition amplifier is the little transister looking piece on the coil bracket itself. try your luck with a junkyard one and see if that helps

another problem of stalling or running bas when warm is the coolant temp sensor for the ecu. its located near the turbo on the back of the intake and has a brown clip like that of the injectors. if you cant find a replacement, the part cross references with nissan 240 sx and is the brown one. auto zone may not have it listed for 87 rx or for subaru for that matter but the same part should be in stock for nissan
