How to muscle off stuck valve covers?

Featured Replies

The valve covers on the EA81 engine I am rebuilding are stuck on really tight. Repeating beatings with a rubber mallet won't budge them. I tried using the 2x4 and hammer, but still stuck. I suppose someone put on some great gasket sealer once upon a time. Any suggestions for how to break them loose without wrecking the covers?

Are you sure you have all the bolts removed? When I pulled apart my EA82 to fix the cam cover oil seal, there was a bolt or two I missed under the gunk.

Well, I did consider that, but I thought there were only two. But I will go check again to avoid making a fool of myself :).

Gentle tap on all surface area of the valve cover doesnt work that means somebody took RTV and stuck it to the cork or just put a large amt of it in there at one point.

Bust out the prybar and gently pry em off.

Hey they won't budge that should mean no leaks? Don't fix what's not broken . Yeah...well...won't budge? They are made of steel...i'm sure they can take a beating. I'd pry them off. Yeah EA81s only have two bolts. Maybe some PB Blaster or some other penetrating oil around the covers?

Yeah, I have some penetrating oil soaking on the edges. I suspect it will do no good. I will try prying them off tonight. I guess nothing but force is going to break the seal since the whole point of using RTV is to make them stick no matter what.
