When I was doing my first tune up I discovered that I could not have the rubber air intake “hose” disconnected from the throttle mouth. I guess the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) wasn’t getting any AIR FLOW and the engine would die. Is this normal? Is there any way to look inside the throttle throat while the car is running normally?

Yep, gotta keep that air flowing through the MAF Also making a whole lot of vacume leakage there if you take the snorkel off the MAF.

 

Reason for looking down TB while engine is running?

I wanted to look down the TB while the engine is running to see the spray pattern of the fuel injector plus I just wanted to get rid of the stuff on top to make it easier to get to the some of the connectors next to the TB. I’m just an old fashioned shade tree mechanic that is used to popping off the air filter on top of the carb, first thing. But it certainly is good to know that if I have a fuel problem, I better not try and fix it with the MAF not getting any air flow.

Yes, that's perfectly normal (I've done it by mistake too - forgot to hook up the MAF). The engine will start, run for a few seconds, and die.
