March 24, 200521 yr what does it take to switch this carbed EA81 to fuel injection? from what i have been reading the SPFI manifold will fit the carbed EA81? what else do i need to know for this carb-to-FI swap? what year SPFI donor vehicle should i be looking for? the EA81 comes out of an 85 Brat and will go into a VW bus with a KEP plate
March 24, 200521 yr I highly recommend going with the weber carb conversion. My 61 panel van has an EA-81 weber setup and the power band is great.Easy to work on too! Bluesbug
March 25, 200521 yr Author OK , do those still sell new? or do i rebuild a used one? what cost if new? does the weber only fit on a modified SPFI manifold as i have been reading about? or is that unnecessary? how did you work out the exhaust? it almost looks like the stock front pipe can be used. assuming it can, the rest would be a cinch!
March 27, 200521 yr Put a wanted to buy add on the marketplace on this site. You can probably find a good used carb/manifold.Search in the older suby area for WEBER and get addl info....For my exaust I cut off the two pipes about a foot down from where they bolt on the engine, and later had a muffler shop add a Y pipe,a flange,a turbo muffler,a u turn and a side exit with a chrome tip.It looks and sounds great and was $150 well spent..
March 27, 200521 yr NVBigBlue is doing this swap as we speak. Here is the link to the thread. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31356
April 20, 200520 yr You can also use a Holley 5200, which are very common, and can still be bought new (reman) at your auto parts store. It is very similar to the Weber 32/36. Holly licensed the design from Weber. It is used on pintos and late 70's style mustangs. the only catch is that you'll have to make an adapter plate because the bolt pattern is different. I went with this setup because it was WAY cheaper than a new weber and parts are easy to find.
April 21, 200520 yr If you do go the Weber swap, I would swap an EA-82 carbed intake on your engine. You don't really need to do it, but the EA-82 intake, has a larger opening beneath the carb, and I do believe the runners are larger too.
April 21, 200520 yr http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=61 That's the link to the link to the SPFI conversion manual, which should answer a lot of your questions. Lots of people on the USMB absolutely love their Weber carbs. That's why I bought one for my car. I had really bad luck with it so I converted to SPFI, which I have been much happier with.
