1988 3 door (horn problem??????)

Featured Replies

if you have 12v to the horns, I think it's safe to say the horn itself died and needs to be replaced.

However, I've never dealt with the horn system, so I'm sure someone who has will chirp in with more info.

hoozie is right - check to see that you get 12v between the horn contacts when the button is depressed - I can't remember if the horn switch conrols the ground or the hot side - I think it controls the ground - run a ground wire to the proper terminal on the horn to see if it works - if it does, bad horn relay/switch - don't know where the relays are on an '83 - on mine they are under the dash on the left side

No horn relay on an 88, 85 Sub is correct

the horn button provides the ground.

Most likely they are toast, they can be adjusted though

if they make some noise.

To gain access to them the easiest way I have found

is to remove the head lamp assembly

Four 10 mm nuts behind the core support and

one phillips head screw in front about parking light

They will be on the outside almost behind the bumper end caps.

Most folk tap the wiring and add aux horns under the hood.

Hope this helps

i put 12 volts to them and no sound, they are toast.it's time to put new ones somewhere under the hood.thank's again.Bill.

my 86 GL wagon has a horn that works very weakly, but only if you find the right 'spot' on the steering wheel. If you find the right spot, it's just a weak little wimper of a noise (more like a whine, LOL). Would this mean my horns are dead too? Or contacts in the steering wheel itself more likely?

that sounds like the switch in the steering wheel most likely. If you can take the grill off and hook 12v straight to the horn, it will let you know what the case is (you may want to cover your ears though)

I would do that by running a jump wire from my battery straight to the horn?

correct, unplug the horn, then run the jumper wires to the two wires.

I just tested a horn I had lying around, and the polarity did not matter.
