Just wondering if others also have this? im wondering if it could be causing a horrible vibration at highway speeds that seems to followed this tranny from my old 81 to the '83 turbowagon.
April 1, 200521 yr I have a similar scenario Changed to 2 new front shafts and now i have this horriable noise which sounds very much like old CV's but they are new. They make noise when I am driving "almost" straight, curves or whatever, fast or slow. Getting realy pissed off with it

April 7, 200520 yr I looked but didnt measure Im getting a horriable noise when under load, nearly all the time, its really embarrasing in the centre of town. im gonna pull one off and see if there is any wear on the shaft (or get a mechanic's opinion)

That part about "between thee spined output shaft and inner joint" got my attention because I was fooling around under my hood a while ago and thought I noticed the same thing. Now mind you I have no strange sounds anywhere. But when I grabbed the inner joint there was all this slop, and it seemed like it was on the splines. So I went to my donor car and same thing. (no noises in it when it ran either). What I discovered was that when either car is left parked in gear, that slop is gone. The slop is only present when parked in neutral. So I decided that it is normal play in the stub shaft (ouput shaft?) when the tranns is in neutral. I'd question that the vibration is coming from this play. Do you have this play when the car is parked in gear? Pyro
April 7, 200520 yr the play in the axle stub rotationally is the play in the differential gears of the front driveline. any play up and down, side to side would be the bearing that centers the axle stub. if this followed from the last soob with the tranny it very wel may be the tranny if its tired or old. if you have had no reliability issues then go ahead and keep driving. as far as noise is concerned what about a thicker gear oil?
April 7, 200520 yr Author The slop i'm talking about is not caused by the output shafts themselves. Although there is some slop in them, its not nearly as severe. The slop i'm talking about is the inner cv moving on the output shaft. ie the splines of the output shaft have worn badly.

So can those output shafts be replaced? How hard and how much dough? Pyro
April 8, 200520 yr Author Got it. Well then I didn't help a bit!! Sorry. So can those output shafts be replaced? How hard and how much dough? Pyro I'd say it may be cheaper to find a gearbox with less kms on it. My gearbox has a horrible rattle in the transfer case anyway.
