September 3, 200322 yr I'd like to install new wires and plugs in my 91 Legacy for better mileage and/or acceleration (when I need it), but a few questions.... [*]What brand wires & plugs should I use? [*]What kind of gain should I expect, such as high-rpm or low-rpm increase in HP? [*]What about a new coil-pack? Do they even MAKE performance coil packs? [/list=1] Thanks for the help guys & gals! ScoobySchmitty:burnout:
September 4, 200322 yr ngk coppers & magencor. Don't expect to see any real improvements in power with just plugs and wires. Car may run a little smoother.....but like I said, don't expect to see 5 hp.
September 4, 200322 yr Author Yeah, I know that whole Splitfire =5 hp boost is BS, I just didn't know if the wires would make a difference. I've got NGK V-Power plugs in right now, don't know the wires, but it runs well. What other engine mods would be do-able, besides a cold air intake (DONE ) ScoobySchmitty
September 4, 200322 yr I just installed NGK iridium plugs and premium wires from NAPA. they seem to work fine.
September 5, 200322 yr Been through a number of different brands and models. I have settled on Bosch FR7Dx. FR78x "Super 4" don't agree with the DIS. Cables are OE, but only two years old. Cold air intake? Surely the car had this already? Legacies I and II suck air from the right fender. I trust you mean that you have removed the "intake resonator"?? http://www.geocities.com/vik2r/Sube/intake1.jpg
September 6, 200322 yr Author In a matter of speaking, I removed the filter box and replaced it with a Cosmo Racing cone filter. A lot of cars do not follow the "cold air" idea because they worry about mainfold icing, so the pre-heat the intake air. :madder: Stupid idea. You get more power from MORE DENSE cold air! Anyway, it's just a bigger intake than that little hole on my filter box. Legacy777 had said he made more intake holes on the bottom of his airbox, and this worked out as well as a washable filter. Guess I should have read this before spending the $30 on the new filter :-P Oh well, it looks better than the filter box did ScoobySchmitty:banana:
September 14, 200322 yr as was said there are no real gains to "upgrading" plugs and wires on your OE car. if you have the OE engine... what is the point? you wont see any gains. save the $$ and put it elsewhere.... bet OE plugs/wires which were DESIGNED for your car and make the car run RIGHT. NO hiccips NO hesistation issues (these can be found with the inappropriate plugs/wires) most discount subie stores offer these things cheap!!! (ours is 30% off retail!!) that's the route i'm going... and that's my $.02 and change cheers Jamie
September 14, 200322 yr Author Like in the top of the post, I just wanted to get a general concencus on getting new types of plugs/wires. The stock plugs and wires ARE doing a good job right now. Thanks for all the input everybody, this really helps out! ScoobySchmitty
September 14, 200322 yr Is there a difference between Subaru OEM wires and the wires you can order directly from NGK? Does NGK make wires for Subaru? It looks like the OEMs from the dealer cost much less than the NGK when you order directly from NGK. I checked couple of dealers in our area and they are charging exactly the same....
